You know, sometimes I just have to laugh. I spent an hour this morning writing a long complicated Electronic T-Notes rant which contained a number of solutions for getting Fritz6 to run under the upgrade version of Windows ME. I've seen the reports and, frankly, I was baffled by them. I've just purchased a new computer with Windows ME pre-installed and Fritz6 runs with no problems. So I did some digging and came up with four possible solutions.
Of course, after a hour's work, I actually posted the article to the Interrant and then checked my e-mail. In the box was a letter from ChessBase GmbH programmer Matthias Wuellenweber, offering a solution to the Fritz6/Windows ME dilemma. And, of course, it had nothing to do with any of the four solutions I'd offered. DOH!
Here, in full, is Matthias' solution (and it's ridiculously simple, too):
Some users report a problem with Fritz6 after upgrading to Windows Me. Me ships a newer version of shlwapi.dll which is not compatible with the one in the Fritz6.exe folder.
Solution: Simply delete shlwapi.dll in the Fritz6 folder, Fritz6 will then take the dll from Windows\System.
Matthias, thanks for the info!
Good old Microsquish! Now you know why I hate new operating systems. $^%$*^#^%
Until next week, have fun!
